THANKSGIVING 2001 ROCHESTER NEW YORK

“Momma, I just wasted my time coming down here. All he does is lock his room door and refuses to let anyone see him. I’ve been down here a whole week waiting for him and this is how he acts!” I complained to my momma about how Joseph had been acting. I know he felt bad about his two missing legs, but he had family in town to see him including me.

“Laree, Joseph is just depressed right now. He’ll come out of it. Now come on over and eat with me and the rest of the family. Your aunty and your cousins are here from Virginia. They want to see you.”

“Alright momma, I’ll be over there,” I lied before hanging up the phone. I’d been over there all night and had left just a couple of hours ago. I didn’t want to go back and deal with a packed apartment or plead with Joseph through the bedroom door. Besides I knew it would be stuffy over there anyway. My momma’s place was so small you could literally feel one another’s breath in the place. Joseph and I had shared a room since the time we were kids. When he left for the army it was all mines. Now, I guess it was his again since he was back.

“How do ya expect him to act, Laree? The man lost both of his legs,” Tanisha sat down across from me at the kitchen table.

“I really don’t know.” I shrugged feeling irritated by the whole situation. “Forget Joseph, he’ll see me when he wants to see me I have my own issues right now.” I said thinking of how broke I was. Once we’d lost all that money my dreams of becoming a big time entrepreneur deflated. I could easily slow grind here by starting over with some cd’s, but that would take a lifetime to hustle that kind of money up here. There was always a chance that we could relocate but again it would take time.

“Well, from what ya tell me everything is going just fine. What problems do ya have?” asked Tanisha.

I had been lying to her about everything lately and I’d damn near told on myself. “Some things ya just wouldn’t understand.” I replied.

“I would if ya told me!”

“Forget about it. Can we eat now I’m getting hungry?” I changed the subject and Tanisha could tell that’s exactly what I was doing. I was glad that she didn’t keep trying to pull the truth out of me. She stood from the table and made me a plate.

My phone sounded off before I could dig into my food. I was shocked to see that Stillz was calling me. I answered wondering what he had to say. I hope it wasn’t regarding the argument we’d just had. “Hey Stillz,” I tried to sound casual.

“Hey, L, Baybay told me what happened to Joseph. I just wanted to send my condolences. Joseph is a good dude.”

“Thanks Stillz. Thanks a lot.
